Apple iOS entered the technology world with a bang in 2007. With the introduction of the iPhone, the iPod touch and the iPad, Apple, Inc. has had great success selling their products across the world. Despite Apple iOS’s great success, Android OS, created by Google, Inc., has shown to be a tough competitor. These two mobile operating systems are the front runners in the technology-filled world we live in today. They have competed fiercely, each releasing new products with features designed to supersede the competition. Apple Computer, Inc. was originally created in 1976 and was very prosperous (Linzmayer). When Apple iOS was announced along with the first iPhone on January 9th, 2007, Apple dropped the “Computer” part of their name and became Apple, Inc. With a new name to go along with their new focus, this was a sign that Apple, along with iOS, was going to expand the smartphone market dramatically.
Android Inc. was founded in 2003. Google acquired Android Inc. in 2005 when little was known about the company, but Google, Inc. planned on using Android Inc. to enter the smartphone market. “Android has operated under a cloak of secrecy, so little is known about its work. Rubin & Co. have sparingly described the outfit as making software for mobile phones, providing little more detail than that. One source familiar with the company says Android had at one point been working on a software operating system for cell phones” (Elgin). Google’s decision would later pay off, as the company has become a global success in the smartphone marketplace. Though both Apple Inc. and Google Inc. have created extraordinarily powerful mobile operating systems, ultimately, with its enhanced customizability, open source infrastructure, and powerful notification system, Google’s Android OS is the better platform.
Both Apple iOS and Android OS have their strengths and weaknesses. They are both successful systems, and the companies using these systems are putting out widely popular devices. Since these systems have come into existence it has been near impossible for other companies, like Blackberry, to compete. If forced to choose between the two I would choose the Android OS. While the Apple iOS has many great assets, ultimately Android OS’s enhanced customizability makes the system more appealing than Apple iOS. Apple’s layout for the iOS home screen is the same on every device. With most people having the same popular apps, every Apple iOS user has the same looking device. All iPhones, iPads, and even iPod touches look identical. Android appeals to those who wish to customize their device fit their personality and liking. In addition, the notification center on Android OS makes a big difference because it is something that is used on each user’s device daily. Finally, Android OS’s best feature is the open souce nature of the operating system. The fact that many manufacturers can create Android phones gives consumers many different options. I believe that while a user cannot go wrong with either Android OS or Apple iOS, ultimately, they will have greater satisfaction with an Android device. One thing certain, competition between these two mobile operating systems can only mean more great products for consumers in the future.
